PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure stop precision of a motor rotor at microstep drive, and to ensure smoothness of rotation from an ultra-low speed range to a high-speed range. SOLUTION: Bi-phase excitation, where all the terminals of an excitation coil of a stepping motor 1 are connected to one of positive and negative electrodes of a power supply, is composited to achieve four-phase excitation. High resolution of the microstep drive is achieved while the stop precision of the microstep drive and smoothness in rotation are ensured. Excitation following the input of rotation command pluses CWP, CCWP is updated based on a combination excitation change command outputted for each prescribed combination excitation period TC, and the excitation is updated also when the value of a basic step counter for full step drive is updated, thus ensuring constant-velocity rotation properties when the speed of the motor rotor increases, and hence selecting a change to the full step drive from the microstep drive from a wide speed range.
