A reusable closure for a container with a locking ring that engadges securing lugs to clamp the lid to the container

A re-usable closure (20) for an open topped container is disclosed. The container has a side wall that extends to a rim that defines a top opening of the container. The closure (20) includes a cover (22) having a peripheral structure for engaging the container rim, the peripheral structure including an outer wall (26) for surrounding the side wall of the container. The cover (22) further includes at least two spaced securing lugs (28) that are each joined to the outer wall (26) by a hinge (32). The hinge (32) allows the lugs (28) to pivot and move towards and away from the container side wall. Each lug (28) is biased to a normal position that is angled away from the side wall of the container. A locking element (36) surrounds the outer wall (26) of the cover (22) when the closure (20) is locked on to the container. When the locking element (36) is slid over the securing lugs (28) they are pressed inwardly against the container side wall. There they engage with a lip on the container rim thereby securing the closure (20) on the container. To open the container the locking element (36) is slid up so that the securing lugs (28) once again are allowed to move out to the normal position; the closure (20) can then be removed by lifting it of the container.
