<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data relay apparatus that outputs an output of a mainframe or the like from an image processing apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The data relay apparatus 112 for receiving output data from a host computer 110 and transferring it to an image forming apparatus includes a character string extraction means 230 for retrieving a text area included in the output data from the host computer 110 for trigger data indicative of encoding, and acquiring a data area subsequent to the trigger data, an encoded data creation means 240 for receiving information in the data area acquired by the character string extraction means 230 and generating encoded data, and a GUI generation means 280 for generating a graphical user interface for specifying a process for generating an encoded image.
