PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool provided with a hard coated layer demonstrating superior chipping resistance during heavy cutting. SOLUTION: In a surface-coated cutting tool in which the (Ti, Al) N layer is formed on the surface of a base body comprising cemented carbide, cermet, and cubic boron nitride group ultra-high-pressure sintered compact by means of vapor-deposit as a hard coated layer, an entire average composition satisfying X=0.50 to 0.70 and an inclination composition in which X gradually increases from 0.4 to 1.0 as it goes from a lower part side (tool base body side) to an upper part side (surface side) are provided when the (Ti, Al) N layer is represented by the composition formula (Ti<SB>X</SB>Al<SB>1-X</SB>)N, a ratio of area of crystal grain having crystal orientation <111> within a scope of 0 to 15 degrees from the direction of normal line on a surface grinding face is 50% or more when analyzing crystal orientation by EBSD with respect to the layer, and a crystal alignment having a ratio of 0<θ≤15° of 50% or more is indicated when measuring an angle θ formed by adjacent crystal grains.
