<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for desulfurizing molten iron by which, when desulfurizing treatment for the molten iron is performed by using a CaO-containing material-based desulfurizing agent in a mechanical stirring apparatus, utilization efficiency of a desulfurizing reaction of CaC<SB>2</SB>in a CaC<SB>2</SB>-containing material used together with the above desulfurizing agent is increased. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When the total stirring time necessary for the desulfurizing treatment of the molten iron is 5 to 20 min, 80% or more of the whole desulfurizing agent except the CaC<SB>2</SB>-containing material for use in the desulfurizing treatment, is added on or before the starting time of the desulfurizing treatment, and the CaC<SB>2</SB>-containing material is added in the period of 50 to 95% of the whole stirring time necessary for the desulfurizing treatment from the stirring start. It is desirable that the CaC<SB>2</SB>-containing material per 1 ton of the molten iron is 0.05-1 kg in terms of pure CaC<SB>2</SB>and/or Al-containing material is added before addition of the CaC<SB>2</SB>-containing material.
