PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide mat material which prevents damage caused by thermal deterioration and wind erosion even if the material is installed under a high temperature condition in an application for a muffler of an automobile or the like, and has excellent handling properties. SOLUTION: The mat material mainly comprises inorganic fiber and includes a plurality of needle marks formed by needle punching progressing from a needle penetration lead-in mark formed on a surface to a needle penetration lead-out mark formed on a surface at a reverse side of the surface on which the needle penetration lead-in mark is formed. The plurality of inorganic fibers are arranged in closed loop shapes to form an inorganic fiber bundle at the needle penetration lead-out mark, and the inorganic fiber bundle is formed on at least one surface.
