A method of determining the presence of a discrete anomaly within a fluid using a fluid sensing apparatus which includes a resistive transducer and an indicator element is disclosed. The method comprises: a) causing fluid to flow past the resistive transducer; b) receiving at least one signal from the resistive transducer which varies with respect to the presence of a discrete anomaly in contact with the resistive transducer; c) determining a quiescent state of the resistive transducer signal; d) activating the indicator element to indicate the presence of a particular discrete anomaly if the resistive transducer signal varies significantly with respect to the quiescent state.
