PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress image quality degradation on cross-process edges which appear in objects such as characters, drawings, etc. SOLUTION: A color component-separated image data storage unit 204 stores image data separated by color components. A cross-process edge detector 224 detects an edge constituting part of an object from the color component-separated image data. When the edge is a cross-process edge, an inter-printhead image value mapper 210 nonuniformly distributes the pixel values of various pixels constituting the edge-accompanying object to printhead-corresponding pixel value storage units. For example, they are distributed so as to be concentrated in any one of printhead-corresponding pixel value storage units 218<SB>1</SB>to 218<SB>N</SB>which are provided so as to correspond to a plurality of printheads. Then, in accordance with the pixel values on the storage units 218<SB>1</SB>to 218<SB>N</SB>, the image thereof is recorded by the plurality of serially disposed printheads.
