Modulation of stem and progenitor cell differentiation, assays, and uses thereof

A method for modulating the differentiation of mammalian stem cells or progenitor cells comprising contacting said stem cells or progenitor cells for at least six days with a compound that inhibits TNF-a activity, under conditions in which said stem cells or progenitor cells differentiate, wherein said compound is an amino-substituted thalidomide analogue or an amino-substituted isoindoline; and with the proviso that said stem cells are not totipotent human stem cells.
