<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lightening optical system for a two plate type projector which can stably obtain lightening having a desired wavelength band, and can obtain stable color reproducibility over a long period without using a rotary color filter. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The light path of the lightening of rectilinear polarized light from a light source part 10 is alternately changed into the first light path 21 and into the second light path 22 by a light path changing part 20. In the first light path 21, the light of the first wavelength region is selected by the first wavelength region selection element 33, and, in the second light path 22, the light of the second wavelength region is selected by the second wavelength region selection element 37, and the light is introduced into a two plate type spatial light modulation part 50.
