Use of one or more lanthanide salts (I) as an agent for protecting the color of keratin fibers dyed artificially by direct dyeing or by non-indole oxidation coloring in the presence of an oxidizing agent from washing, is claimed. Independent claims are included for: (1) protecting the color from washing of artificially dyed keratin fibers including human keratin fibers, preferably hair, comprising applying (I) in a medium, on the fibers; (2) coloring keratin fibers, including human keratin fibers, preferably hair, comprising applying a direct dye composition (A) or a non-indole oxidation composition optionally in the presence of one or more oxidizing agents, on the fibers, for a sufficient time to develop the color and to precede or follow the application by application of a composition (B) comprising (I) in medium; (3) dyeing keratin fibers, preferably human keratin hair, comprising applying the direct dye composition (A) or non-indole oxidation dye composition for a sufficient time to develop the color, where the composition (A) comprises (I) in medium, on the fiber; and (4) a kit comprising at least one first component (or compartment) comprising a composition (B) comprising one or more (I) in a medium, and at least one second component (or compartment) comprising a non-indole dye composition (A) comprising at least one oxidation dye and/or or at least one a direct dye, where the two components are optionally associated with a third component (or compartment) comprising one or more oxidizing agents.
