<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the startability of an engine, whose output shaft is connected via a damper with a latter stage shaft, by utilizing the torsion angle of the damper. <P>SOLUTION: When a predetermined time tref1 has been passed since an engine is started, if the torsion angle θ of the damper has been continued to be less than a predetermined angle θref for a predetermined time tref2 or more, the engine and a motor are controlled so that fuel injection and ignition are started to start the engine (S100 to 160, S180 to S230). If the torsion angle θ being less than the predetermined angle θref has not been continued for the predetermined time tref2, the cranking of the engine is continued by increasing the torque output from the motor by torque Tc1.
