PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet-like material conveying device capable of automatically adjusting the nip pressure so that a sheet-like material can be reliably separated and conveyed. SOLUTION: An image scanner device includes a separation roller 32 to be rotation-driven, a retard roller 37, a nip pressure adjusting unit 86, an ultrasonic sensor 46, a document sensor 45, and a control unit. The retard roller 37 is arranged opposite to the separation roller 32. The nip pressure adjusting unit 86 adjusts the nip pressure between the separation roller 32 and the retard roller 37. The ultrasonic sensor 46 detects the thickness of a document. The document sensor 45 detects the state that the document is passed through a space between the separation roller 32 and the retard roller 37 by detecting a rear end of the document. The control unit automatically adjusts the nip pressure by the nip pressure adjusting unit 86 according to the thickness detected by the ultrasonic sensor 46 after the rear end of the document is detected by the document sensor 45.
