PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent that gives a liquid crystal alignment layer having excellent liquid crystal aligning performance and exhibiting superior electric characteristics, in particular, excellent in a voltage retaining rate and afterimage characteristics. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal aligning agent contains a specified polyorganosiloxane having a group having a steroid skeleton or a group expressed by formula (1A). In formula (1A), R represents a 4C-20C alkyl group, which may be substituted with fluorine; A<SP>II</SP>represents a cyclohexylene ring or a phenylene group; X represents a single bond, an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, -COO- or -OCO-; a is an integer of 0 to 3; and when a plurality of A<SP>II</SP>are present, they may be identical or different from each other.
