PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple matrix type display element that increase the number of pixels which can be displayed with respect to the number of outputs from a driving circuit. SOLUTION: The matrix display element includes: a first substrate 41 having a plurality of first band-like electrodes 43 provided in parallel, a second substrate 42 having a plurality of second band-like electrodes 44 provided in parallel, and a display material with a memory property held between the first and second substrates. The plurality of first band-like electrodes are arranged to face and cross the plurality of second band-like electrodes, and a pixel is formed in each cross part. The matrix display element includes electrode connection parts 45A-45D for connecting at least one part of the plurality of first band-like electrodes to at least corresponding one part of the plurality of second band-like electrodes. The plurality of first band-like electrodes and the plurality of second band-like electrodes connected by the electrode connection parts are not crossed in any part other than the electrode connection parts.
