Preparation of gamma-amino acids having affinity for the alpha-2-delta protein

Disclosed are materials and methods for preparing optically active and gamma amino acids of Formula I which bind to the alpha-2-delta subunit of a calcium channel. These compounds, including their pharmaceutically acceptable salts, solvates and hydrates, are useful for treating vasomotor symptoms, restless legs syndrome, epilepsy and a variety of neurodegenerative, psychiatric and sleep disorders.
