PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stably and efficiently producing a highly unsaturated fatty acid. SOLUTION: The method for producing a highly unsaturated fatty acid using microorganisms belonging to the genus Schizochytorium having stably proliferative ability and lipid productive ability over a wide temperature range, especially Schizochytorium sp. M-8 strain (FERM P-19755), is provided. The microorganisms have stably proliferative ability and lipid productive ability over a temperature range between 15 and 35°C, thereby need no strict temperature control unlike in the cases with other marine eukaryotic microorganisms, thus enabling such a highly unsaturated fatty acid to be produced industrially, stably and efficiently.
