The method involves determining multiple image characteristics, and detecting lanes (20, 22) based on the determined image characteristics i.e. trace markings. Contrast leaps in digitized images are determined. An area adjacent to the lanes is detected based on determined contrast leaps in a standard deviation of brightness of pixels lying next to each other. An area for delimitation of the lanes is detected based on a sample determined in a sequence of images. An independent claim is also included for a device for detection of a lane.
