A friction transmission belt (B) is provided with an adhesion rubber layer (11) in which core wires (16) are embedded so as to form helices having a pitch in the belt width direction, a compression rubber layer (12) which is a pulley contact section and is provided on that surface of the adhesion rubber layer (11) which is on the inner surface side of the belt, and a rear surface rubber layer (17) which is a belt rear surface section and is provided on that surface of the adhesion rubber layer (11) which is on the inner side of the belt.  The ratio of the amount of tensile stress of a rubber composite which forms the adhesion rubber layer (11) to the amount of tensile of a rubber composite which forms the rear surface rubber layer (17) is not less than 1.77, where both the tensile stress is measured at 10% elongation in the longitudinal direction of the belt at an ambient temperature of 25°C in accordance with JIS K 6251.
