A catalyst for solid polymer fuel cells, which exhibits high durability and high power generation performance regardless of humidification conditions or loading conditions. Specifically disclosed is a catalyst for solid polymer fuel cells, wherein a catalyst component is supported by a carbon material.  The carbon material has a water vapor adsorption at a relative humidity of 10% at 25°C (V10) of not more than 2 ml/g, and a water vapor adsorption at a relative humidity of 90% at 25°C (V90) of not less than 400 ml/g.
