The method involves determining parameters of a battery from loading phases. A deviation measure is calculated from the battery parameters for characteristics of reference batteries, where the reference batteries have different capacities. Capacity of the battery is determined or estimated based on an analysis of deviation measurements. Time course of current and voltage is evaluated for each of the loading phases, and starting parameters are determined, where the starting parameters characterize the beginning of the loading phases.
