<p>Disclosed is a process for producing a silane-modified cationized cellulose having excellent dispersibility in water, which comprises the following steps: (1) cationizing a water-soluble cellulose ether in a mixed solvent of a water-compatible organic solvent and water in the presence of an alkali to form a slurry containing a cationized cellulose; (2) adding an acid to the slurry to neutralize the alkali; (3) reacting the cationized cellulose with an aminosilane compound in an amount of 0.3 to 10 mass% relative to the amount of the water-soluble cellulose ether used in the step (1); and (4) drying the resulting slurry. In the process, the drying in the step (4) may be carried out at 115 to 160°C until the weight loss through drying becomes 5 wt% or less. Alternatively, the process may further comprise a step (5) of adding a water-compatible organic solvent or a mixed solvent of a water-compatible organic solvent and water to the cationized cellulose yielded after the neutralization so that the water content in the whole solvent that contacts with the cationized cellulose becomes 10 mass% or less.</p> |
