PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling brightness of a television with a light emitting unit and an adjusting method thereof are provided to maintain ambient light of the television to the fixed brightness when intensity of illumination of a screen is changed. CONSTITUTION: An illumination sensor(105) detects ambient light of a television. A light emitting unit(130) emits light. A luminance sensing unit(120) detects screen brightness of an image. When a value of the ambient light of the television which is detected by the illumination sensor, is lower than a fixed value, a control unit(140) controls intensity of illumination of the luminance sensing unit according to screen brightness of the detected images.
