The device (16) has a retaining unit (20) fixed to a door side close to an edge (12) of a door (14), and another retaining unit (18) fixed to a door column (10) of a motor vehicle body. The retaining units are connected together during accident-related impact of the door for holding the edge of the door to the door column. The former retaining unit is designed as a crash pin (32) that together with the latter retaining unit forms a socket. The retaining elements are fixed in an initial position, and are in contact with each other only during accident-related impact of the door.
