1,010,141. Injection moulding footwear. BRITISH BATA CO. Ltd. Nov. 29, 1961 [Dec. 16, 1960], No. 43376/60. Heading B5A. Ungelled plasticol is fed under pressure from a mixer 10 into an injector 16, where it is gelled by heating elements 60 before it is injected into a shoe mould 25 carried on a turn-table 24 and in which mould 25 the thermoplastic material cools and solidifies in conformity with one-or more surfaces of a last placed within the mould cavity. The plasticol comprises polyvinyl chloride resin, a stabilizer, a plasticizer and pigment which may be added to the mixer 10 or to receptacles 11 provided between the mixer and the injector. The plasticol may be heated before it is supplied to the injector. The bearings supporting the shaft of the injector feed-screw are protected from the plasticol by a sealing ring, a grooved portion of said shaft and a closure ring enclosing a space in proximity to the bearings and into which space plasticol entering is expelled under pressure from an exhaust port. Aeration or de-aeration may be effected to produce footwear of microcellular or dense structure respectively.
