Disclosed is an elevator safety device capable of preventing a light beam from entering the eyes of passengers. The elevator safety device is equipped with a light-projecting means that projects a light beam that cuts across the doorway; a light-receiving means that detects the light beam projected from the light-projecting means; a foreign object detection means that generates a foreign object detection signal when detection of the light beam by the light-receiving means is interrupted; and a control means. The control means causes the light-projecting means to stop the projection operation when both car doors are completely open, and causes the light-projecting means to begin the projection operation as both car doors start to close or while both car doors are closing.
