A composition for treating cellulose acetate tow for cigarette filters comprises 25-50% by weight of polyethylene glycol and 50 to 75% by weight of a plasticizer for the tow. Up to 15% water and up to about 1% dispersing agent may also be present. Specified plasticizers are glycerol acetates, propionates and mixed acetate/propionate esters, dimethyl phthalate, triethyl citrate, propylene glycol mono- and di-acetates, bis-(methoxyethyl) phthalate and methylphthalylethyl glycollate.ALSO:Tobacco smoke filters are made by treating a spread tow of crimped continuous filaments of cellulose acetate with a composition comprising 20-50% by wt. of polyethylene glycol and 50-75% by wt. of a plasticizer for the tow. Specified plasticizers are glycerol acetates, propionates and mixed acetate/propionate esters, dimethyl phthalate, triethyl citrate, propylene glycol mono- and di-acetates, bis (methoxymethyl) phthalate and methylphthalylethyl glycollate. Up to 15% water and 1% dispersing agent may be present.ALSO:A method of treating a tow of crimped continuous filaments of cellulose acetate in the production of tobacco smoke filters comprises spreading the filaments and applying thereto a composition comprising 20 to 50% by weight of polyethylene glycol and 50 to 75% by weight of a plasticiser for the tow. Specified plasticisers are glycerol acetates, propionates and mixed acetate/propionate esters, dimethyl phthalate, triethyl citrate, propylene glycol mono- and di-acetates, bis(methoxymethyl) phthalate and methylphthalylethyl glycollate. Up to 15% water and 1% dispersing agent may also be in the composition.
|
