The peripheral illumination (U) has a light source arranged outside a vehicle (1). The light source or a light conductor (3) impinged with light is arranged in a lateral protective strip (2) of a vehicle body. The lateral protective strip is arranged on lower edges (1.2.1,1.3.1) of vehicle doors. The lateral protective strip has a light emitting surface (F) which is aligned downwards in the direction of ground.
