The invention discloses a method and system for video monitoring system to implement media traversing Network Address Translation (NAT). Entering the flow of Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) signaling interaction and playing by establishing the Transfer Control Protocol (TCP) connection from the client to the monitoring front end; the monitoring front end informs the client to transmit the RTSP signaling traversing packet according to the signaling address, the client implements the media traversing from the monitoring front end to the client side by extending the RTSP signaling according to the received media obtaining response message, and the traversing of the media RTSP signaling and the media code stream is directly completed through the NAT device. In the invention, the configuration of the monitoring front end and the extended RTSP signaling are simple and practical, and the media signaling and the code stream need not to be relayed by the stream media server. Using the existing public network and private network to carry the video monitoring system, the present invention completes that the media traverses the NAT device, which can make the user more convenient to use and the cost cheaper.
