A staple magazine for a stapling machine having a driving blade 22 and a front plate (21, Fig. 7) partly defining a discharge channel 20 comprises a base 3 having two pairs of upstanding walls (1, 2, Fig. 2) and (4, 5) so that wide or narrow staples (8, 9) may, alternatively, be fed to the driving blade, a deflectable guide means 15 being provided in order to prevent lateral movement of the narrow staple during driving. The deflectable guide means as shown is in the form of a plate 15 pivoted between the pair of inner walls (4, 5) and spring loaded so that a bent end portion (15b) normally extends into the drive channel 20. In operation, when using wide staples, the forwardmost staple, when it enters the channel, is located laterally by engaging the inner surfaces 1a, 2a of outer walls 1, 2, the staple then being driven by the driving blade 22, the latter engaging the portion (15b) thereby pivoting the guide plate clear. When using the narrow staples, the forwardmost staple is located laterally by the outer edge surfaces of the portion 15b prior to driving. In modifications, the guide means may be in the form of a spring-loaded block having a tapered face or in the form of a spring-plate (28, Fig. 7), the end of the plate being secured to the front plate (21) of the stapling machine.</p> |
