The gas meter (3) is arranged in a bypass (2) of a gas line (1). In the bypass, a closing device (4,4') is provided in front of and behind a sensor (31) of the gas meter, to interrupt the gas supply. The closing devices may be arranged in a wall of the gas pipe. The closing device may comprise a swellable material which expands on heating to close the bypass.
