One embodiment of the invention provides a method for registering a first three-dimensional medical image of a colon with a second three-dimensional medical image of the colon. The method includes segmenting the first and second three-dimensional images of the colon and extracting a first and second surface representing the surface of the colon from the first and second three-dimensional images respectively. The method further includes generating first and second mappings that map the first and second surfaces to first and second two-dimensional representations of the colon surface respectively. The method further includes determining a third mapping for transforming between the first two-dimensional representation of the colon surface and the second two-dimensional representation of the colon surface. The registration of the first three-dimensional image of the colon with the second three-dimensional image of the colon is performed on the basis of said first, second and third mappings. The method can also be used with other tubular organs apart from the colon. |
