A surface agitator (as shown, that of Specification 919,467) is mounted for translation in a closed path at the end of an arm rotatable about a pivot as by the reaction caused by the rotation of the agitator in the liquid. The agitator and its motor and gearbox 19, 18 may be mounted at the end of an arm constituted by parallel links 24 rotatable by means of a bearing 22 about a fixed spindle 21, and may be assisted to float by a counterweight 28. The preferred speed of rotation of the agitator is 30-300 r.p.m. ; it may be arranged to follow an epicyclic or square path.</p> |
