In a process for the manufacture of laminated articles having a plastic or resinous foam core, e.g. polyurethane foam, a lower sheet of facing material 1 is drawn on to the forward portion of a fixed surface 3 where a nozzle 4 dispenses on to the sheet a liquid mixture of foamforming ingredients in a fan-shaped jet 5. Air from a pipe 6, slotted along its length, blows over the sheet to evenly distribute the foam and the sheet is then drawn over the heated backward half 7 of the fixed surface and the foam 8 starts to swell. An upper sheet of facing material 9 is drawn by the upper conveying surface 11 to meet the rising foam, and the upper and lower sheets of facing material with the sheet of foam between them pass through the nip formed by the upper and lower conveying surfaces 11, 13 setting of the foam taking place as the assembly passes between heated platens 15, 16. The slotted pipe 6 may be replaced by a perforated rotating drum. The dispensing device 4 is attached to a traverse system to move it laterally to and fro across the fixed surface, and may be adjusted vertically. The fixed surface 3, 7 is preferably the upper surface of a platen or box and may contain gaps, which may be bridged by thin lateral supporting members, and through which the lower facing sheet may be exposed to radiant heat. Alternatively, the heating may be by means of electric heating elements or pipes containing hot air or liquid or induction heating. The part 3 may be positively cooled by means of cold liquid or gas pipes or chambers. The facing sheets may both be flexible or one may be rigid, and may be of paper, wood, plastic, metal, rubber, paper-board, plasterboard or asbestos. |
