Spinnable solutions of acrylonitrile polymers are produced by polymerizing monomers dissolved in aqueous nitric acid containing 55-68% by weight of HNO3 in the presence of a catalyst comprising peroxidic compounds and dicarbonyl compounds of heavy metals. In the examples acrylonitrile is homopolymerized or copolymerized with methyl acrylate alone or with tercomonomers itaconic acid or sodium methallyl sulphonate. Further monomers are specified. Suitable peroxidic compounds include peroxydisulphuric acid and its ammonium and alkali metal salts, peroxymonosulphuric acid and acetyl peroxide. The dicarbonyl compounds are produced in situ from iron, copper or silver salts, e.g. nitrates and suitable organic dicarbonyl compounds such as acetyl acetone, benzoyl acetone, acetoacetanilide, dibenzoyl methane, barbituric acid, 5,5 - dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione, resorcinol and phloroglucinol.
