Heat loss from a stack of fuel cells 4 mounted on a base-plate 26 secured to the inner wall 36 of a double-walled container 34 filled with insulation 42 is minimized by circulating the fuel or oxidant through an annular passage 60 formed in a flange 58 below the base-plate before it enters the fuel cells by way of a standpipe 68. The fuel or oxidant picks up heat transferred along sleeve 44 and returns it to the fuel cells. A closure cap 50 is secured below the annular passage 60. Pressure is applied to the seals of the fuel cells by a ring of tie bolts 32 extending between base plate 26 and a clamping plate 28. |
