Unsaturated aliphatic nitriles are prepared by contacting a saturated aliphatic nitrile with a catalyst at 500 DEG to 700 DEG C. for a contact time of 0.1 to 20 seconds, the catalyst comprising a carrier and a promoter, the carrier being activated alumina or activated carbon and the promoter being at least one of sodium, potassium, lithium and cesium, the promoter being present in an amount which is equivalent in metal content to an amount of the oxide of the metal equal to from 0.1 to 20% by weight of the carrier. The promoter is preferably in the form of a cyanide, hydroxide, nitrate or oxide or at least one of Na, Li, K and Cs. Examples are given. |
