A water in oil emulsion is stabilized by a copolymer of an amide (A) of formula where R/sv is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl hydroxy radical of not more than 5 carbon atoms, R3 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or an alkyl hydroxy radical of more than 5 carbon atoms; and a sulphonium compound (B) of formula where R4 is hydrogen methyl or ethyl, R5 is an alkylidene radical having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms, R6 is an alkyl group of from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, R7 is an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms when X is a halogen and a methyl group or ethyl group when X is methyl sulphate or ethyl sulphate. (A) may be acrylamide, methacrylamide, N-Methyl acrylamide, N-3 DEG butyl acrylamide N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide, N-methylolacrylamide. (B) may be 2-acryloxyethyl-dimethyl sulphonium methyl sulphate. The term "oil" includes microcrystalline wax. Compositions may include (C) lanolin or higher aliphatic dialkylol-amides; an emulsifier (D) such as beeswax-lime, beeswax-borax, sorbitan sesquioleate lanolin alcohols, polyoxyethylene esters of C12-C16 fatty acids, stearates of Ca, Al or Zn, neutral esters of polyhydric alcohols and of fatty acids having at least 10 carbon atoms per molecule, particularly polyglycerol oleate; and (E) formalin as preservative; polyhydroxy alcohols as anti-freeze agents and humectants; higher fatty alcohols and cellulosic compounds as thickeners; selenium disulphide as anti-seborrheic agent. Preferred proportions by weight are:- oil from 30 to 60%; copolymer of (A) and (B) from 0.1% to 1%; component (C) up to 2%; polyglycerol oleate emulsifier (D) from 0.2% to 1%; bees-wax-lime emulsifier (D) from 2.5% to 3.5%; antifreeze agents (E) up to 8%.ALSO:A hair dressing composition comprises a water in oil emulsion containing from 30% to 60% by weight of an oil which is a hair grooming agent; a stabilizing agent which is a copolymer of an amide (A) of formula where R/sv is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl hydroxy radical of not more than 5 carbon atoms, R3 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or an alkyl hydroxy radical of more than 5 carbon atoms; and a sulphonium compound (B) of formula where R4 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R5 is an alkylidene radical having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms, R7 is an alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, R7 is an alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms when X is a halogen, and a methyl or ethyl group when X is a methyl sulphate or ethylsulphate group; and an emulsifying agent. The composition may also include hair conditioning agents such as lanolin and aliphatic dialkylolamides; preservatives; antifreeze agents; humectants; dyes; thickeners; buffering agents and anti-seborrheic agents; some of these are exemplified.
