PURPOSE: A novel solvatochromic dye is provided to be applicable as an effective probe for detecting volatile organic chemicals by changing colors according to the kind of solvents. CONSTITUTION: A novel solvatochromic dye has a structure represented by chemical formula 1. A method for preparing solvatochromic dye comprises the steps of: polymerizing and condensing a compound represented by chemical formula 2 to (2,6-dimethyl-4H-pyran-4-one) represented by chemical formula 1 to obtain (5-(2,6-dimethyl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene)-1,3-dimethylpyrimidine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione) represented by chemical formula 4; and polymerizing and condensing a compound represented by chemical formula 4 with (4-((2-hydroxyethyl)(methyl)amino)benzaldehyde) represented by chemical formula 6.
