<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of acquiring proper white reference data by avoiding reading of dark spots even if the dark spots exist on a white reference member or a contact glass and preventing scale-up of the white reference member and an apparatus body, and to provide an image forming apparatus with the image reading apparatus. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus 21 includes: a light source 1, a reflection plate 2, a first carriage 8, a second carriage 9, a contact glass 25, a white reference plate 55, a CCD sensor 7 in which four line sensors 7a-7d are disposed equally spaced, and a control unit 60. If dark spots exist on reading regions S(R)-S(G) of the line sensors 7a-7d in the white reference plate 55, the control unit 60 executes a dark spot avoiding operation for moving the reading regions S(R)-S(G) so that the dark spots can be disposed between the reading regions S(R)-S(G) and acquires the white reference data.
