PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup element capable of transmitting pixel signals read from a pixel section speedily by light signals. SOLUTION: The solid-state image pickup element 1A includes: the pixel section 10A for converting light to electric signals; an A/D conversion section 11A for converting signals read from the pixel section 10A to digital signals; an optical communication section 12A for converting the signals digitized by the A/D conversion section 11A to light signals for output; a timing generator 13A for generating drive clocks for synchronizing the I/O of the signals at the pixel section 10A, A/D conversion section 11A, and the optical communication section 12A; and a control section 16A for controlling the read of the signals.
