<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and playback device which enables a representative thumbnail of a recording title to be easily set on a recording title list without playing back the recording title. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A recording and playback device 10 has a recording means recording an input image signal as a recording title, and a recording title list generation means generating the recording title list in which the recording titles recorded by the recording means are tabulated. The recording and playback device 10 has a thumbnail image generation means generating a plurality of images based on a predetermined number as thumbnails from recording titles selected by a user and generating an image in which the generated thumbnails are tabulated, and a display output means for output of the thumbnail images generated by the thumbnail image generation means on a display means. The recording title list generation means sets the thumbnail selected by the user from the thumbnail images displayed on the display means as a representative thumbnail of the selected recording titles in the recording title list.
