According to the disclosed method, biomass of any kind is specifically withdrawn from an aerobic decomposition process in a free natural environment by storing the biomass in a subterranean cavern (1) that is isolated from the groundwater such that the carbon organically bound therein remains permanently locked in the cavern (1) as a CO2 equivalent. In a combination, the method is used for reducing CO2 and/or methane gas in the atmosphere so as to obtain biogas. A portion of the biomass is converted into biogas by means of a fermentation process and is withdrawn, and the remaining portion of biomass comprising the organically bound carbon as a CO2 equivalent remains permanently locked in the cavern. The system for carrying out said method comprises a gas-tight cavern (1) which is isolated from the groundwater, lies in stable strata below the ground or the bottom of the sea, and is tapped via a supply pipe (2) for introducing biomass. A dosing device (3) comprising a pressure lock is used for introducing biomass into the interior of the cavern in which the pressure exceeds the atmospheric pressure. Methane gas can be removed via a discharge pipe (12) comprising a pump (13). |
