PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pulse detecting apparatus for operating a pulse wave sensor only at a position of a hand of a driver.

SOLUTION: This apparatus comprises a position detecting means 10 for detecting a position of a hand 2 of a driver put on a steering wheel 1 and at least one light emitting element 21 and at least one light receiving element 22 and has a plurality of pulse wave sensors 20 mounted on the steering wheel 1, a selecting means 30 for selecting the pulse wave sensor 20 corresponding to the position of the hand 2 detected by the detecting means 10 for detecting the position from the plurality of pulse wave sensors 20, a control means 40 for emitting the selected light emitting element 21 and selecting an output signal from the selected light receiving element 22, and a pulse computing means 50 for computing a pulse of the driver based on the signal output by the selected light receiving element 22.
