<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve combustion states in respective cylinders by suppressing dispersion in combustion state among the respective cylinders and to prevent deterioration of a NOx generating amount and a discharge amount of exhaust minute particles of an entire engine resulted from the dispersion. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A method for recirculating exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine 10 equipped with the plurality of cylinders 12 and recirculating exhaust gas of each cylinder 12 to an intake passage 14 includes: setting an operation state monitoring index i having parameters of an oxygen concentration and intake-air temperature of intake gas s as an index representing the combustion state of the cylinder 12; calculating beforehand a target value i<SB>p</SB>of the operation state monitoring index for achieving a targeted combustion state; calculating the operation state monitoring index i at each cylinder 12 by detecting intake-air temperature and an oxygen concentration in the intake passage 12 after merging with exhaust gas; and regulating an exhaust gas recirculation amount to each cylinder 12 so that the operation state monitoring index i at each cylinder 12 reaches the target value.
