<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an upper body and a construction machine equipped with the upper body combining the assurance of a maintenance space for an engine on the upper body and the improvement of the cooling efficiency of the engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The upper body includes a passage provided between mounting parts 5, 6 and the engine 7, and a covering member 14 covering the engine 7 from above to form an engine room S1 surrounding the engine 7. The covering member 14 includes a guard body 17 covering at least part of the engine 7, and a covering panel 23 covering a passage 8 from above. The covering panel 23 is constituted to be displaceable relative to the guard body 17 between a covering attitude for forming the engine room S1 in a state of covering at least part of the passage 8 from above and an exposing attitude for exposing the passage 8 upward while covering at least part of the engine 7 with the guard body 17.
