PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for the regeneration of a catalyst containing at least one metal of group VIII and at least one metal of group VIB which are deposited on a refractory oxide support. SOLUTION: The process comprises at least one first step of heat treatment of the catalyst in the presence of oxygen at a temperature range of 350-550°C, and at least one second step of deposition of at least one additive represented by formula (I): R<SB>1</SB>O-CO-R<SB>2</SB>-S-R<SB>3</SB>on the surface of the catalyst where R<SB>1</SB>is a saturated or unsaturated straight or branched chain hydrocarbon group having 1-30 hydrogen or carbon atoms, R<SB>2</SB>is a saturated or unsaturated straight or branched chain bivalent hydrocarbon group having 1-30 carbon atoms, which may optionally have at least one hetero atom selected from an oxygen atom and a nitrogen atom, and R<SB>3</SB>is a saturated or unsaturated straight or branched chain hydrocarbon group having 1-30 carbon atoms.
