PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT OF DUAL MODE DEVICES FOR DATA-OVER-CABLE APPLICATIONS

A method of improving throughput for a wireless interface of a dual mode device operating as a user-terminal of a data system connected to a cable network includes receiving synchronization information from the cable network via a time division multiplexed protocol. The synchronization information includes timing information for uplink and downlink time opportunities in the time division multiplexed protocol. The user terminal determines available wireless interface operation time based on the timing information. The user terminal then switches from a time division multiplexed protocol mode operating at a first frequency to a wireless mode operating at a second frequency based on the determined opportunity for wireless operation time.
