[Also in Division E2] A stack 2 of fuel cells mounted between a base 26 and cover 29 is clamped together in a fluid-tight manner by a ring of tie bolts 32 extending from the base 26 to a member 28 which has resilient members in contact with the cover 29 and connected to the tie bolts. The member 28 comprises a hub 34 with a plurality of tubes 36 radiating from it. At the end of each tube is a lateral arm 38 terminating in a flat end having a part spherical recess and a vertical opening. Seated in the recess is a washer 46 which is engaged by a nut 48 on the end of one of the tie bolts 32. The clamping pressure is increased against the torsional resistance of the tubes by tightening the nuts. The pressure is transmitted to the stack by an arcuate projection 31 of each tube which engages the cover 29. In an alternative arrangement the lateral arm of the tube engages an adjustable cap secured to the tie rod via a ball. The resilience of the tubes is chosen so that it varies little in the working range of the cells. |
