In a roller bearing having cylindrical rollers, the inner, outer or both inner and outer races have a resilient portion of concave-convex longitudinal section, the centre of which bears on the rollers so that they are pre-stressed thereby. In an embodiment, an outer race 12 which is made of sheet metal, for example, has inwardly-directed flanges 13 which retain rollers 10 and prevent escape of lubricant, is mounted in a housing 8 and pre-stresses rollers 10 which may have tapered end-portions 11. A cage may be provided for the rollers, the cage comprising end-rings and bars, the latter having their centre portions off-set so that the rollers are engaged adjacent their ends only and so that the rollers are prevented from being displaced inwardly. In a modification, the outer race 22, Fig. 4 (not shown) has inwardlydirected end-flanges 23 and a cage 24, the bars 26 of which are offset so as to retain the rollers when the shaft is not present. In another modification, the outer sleeve has no endflanges and the inner race serves as a shaft. |
